Offering for sale a brand new and boxed example of a Hornby Model Railways BR MK2D Open Standard Coach running number 5638 model reference number R4463C.
The Mark 2 coaches were BR’s second design of coach. They were of all steel construction and built between 1964 and 1975. After the initial Mark 2 (later referred to as Mk2Z), there were six further variants Marks 2A to 2F inclusive incorporating various improvements to interior fittings, doors, gangways, etc.
This model is of the Mark 2D variant which was built in 1971-1972 and had air-conditioning, sealed, tinted windows in the seating area and electric heating. They were fitted with red folding plastic gangway doors and vestibule ends.
In 1987, BR changed the title to Tourist Standard Open, when “Second Class” became “Standard Class” across the network. The TSO designation remains in use for Mark 3A and Mark 4 Open Standard carriages, even though no SO coaches have been constructed since the Mk2a build in the mid 1960s.
