This P4 locomotive in BR Green is named “Barnstable” running number 34005. Like the other models a popular Wrenn locomotive. Production in Basildon Essex commenced in 1968 (Period One) with other examples being made throughout the remaining periods leading up to the factory’s’ closure in 1992 (Period Four).
Seldom do you find a late P4 example, least of all only ever tested and displayed which is very unusual for such a popular engine. The locomotive is in original condition, complete in every respect and includes original period box, packaging, manual and usual holding rings and tissue!
Due to problems with some of the more novel features of Bulleid’s design, all members of the class were rebuilt by British Railways during the late 1950s. The class members were named after the Merchant Navy shipping lines involved in the Battle of the Atlantic. The Merchant Navy class operated until the end of Southern steam in July 1967.
