The W1 No. 10000, nicknamed “Hush-Hush”, was an experimental steam locomotive built by the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER)in the late 1920’s. It was notable for its unique high-pressure water-tube boiler. Which was designed to improve efficiency, and its 4-6-4 wheel arrangement, making it the only standard gauge 4-6-4 tender engine to run on British railways.
In 1936, the W1 was rebuilt with a conventional fire-tube boiler and streamlined casing similar to the A4 class, effectively transforming it into a different locomotive. This was deemed a success in its operational capabilities.
