The GWR 5600 Class (often referred to as the 56XX or 66XX) is a class of 0-6-0T tank steam locomotive built for the Great Western Railways (GWR) between 1924 and 1928.
Designed by Charles Collett, these robust engines were specifically engineered to haul heavy coal trains in the rugged South Wales valleys.
They were relatively large tank engines, 37 ft 6 in (11.43 m) in length and weighing 62 tons. The side tanks could hold 1,900 imp gallons. The 56XX were closely related to the 31xx and 42xx classes. One hundred of the class were built at the GWR workshops in Swindon from 1924 to 1927.
