British Rail (BR) assigned Class 52 to the class of 74 large Type 4 diesel-hydraulic locomotives built for the Western Region of British Railways between 1961 and 1964. All the Western Class 52 locomotives were built at Swindon and Crew, all were fitted with two engines driving two transmissions. Whilst the design was largely successful the working life of the class was relatively short.

Seven locomotives have survived into preservation at heritage railways around the UK and one engine D1015 presently operates on the mainline.

Nice model but a little underwhelmed.

I only began to delve into British Railways this year so the reason I have only given 4 stars for the loco is that out of the 13 purchased from various manufacturers, this one, while you can’t deny the design is something else to look at, the actual model feels dated, soft features, a flimsy shell that looks plastic.

I think I’ll have to pick up the Dapol version at some point to compare with. Anyway, this loco, like all I have is destined for the spray booth and weathering treatment; I believe once the shiny shell is dulled down it will look much improved.

Kudos to Wren Model Railways btw as they came up trumps to provide the detail packs and front skirts that had gone awol with this model.
