British Rail (BR) assigned Class 52 to the class of 74 large Type 4 diesel-hydraulic locomotives built for the Western Region of British Railways between 1961 and 1964. All the Western Class 52 locomotives were built at Swindon and Crew, all were fitted with two engines driving two transmissions. Whilst the design was largely successful the working life of the class was relatively short.

Seven locomotives have survived into preservation at heritage railways around the UK and one engine D1015 presently operates on the mainline.
