An EX-DISPLAY STOCK DCC Ready British Rail 2-BIL 2090 2 Car Box Set example especially developed by "Hornby Model Railways" as part of their National Railway Museum series.

The Southern Railway (SR) gave the designation 2-HAL to the electric multiple units built during the late 1930s to work long-distance semi-fast services on the newly electrified lines from London Victoria to Maidstone and Gillingham (Kent). This type of unit survived long enough in British Rail ownership to be allocated TOPS Class 402.

The first batch of 2 BIL units (as well as all subsequent orders) were constructed at Eastleigh on new under frames from Lancing with steel‑clad timber framed bodies and canvas covered roofs. These units were not gangwayed between coaches. But were coupled with the center buffer and three-link chain arrangement.

As they were used for lengthy services, it was considered necessary for all passengers to have access to a lavatory. So each coach was provided with a side corridor and one lavatory these being located at the opposite end to the driving cabs.
